Conway's Little CornerFebruary 14 Talking about Celizic: Clemens fails in attempt at damage control - Baseball- msnbc.comI must agree with ya on the 'professional entertainer' part with Clemens. That is what any sports figure is;an entertainer. From the way you have approached the situation tho it sounds like you don't like Clemens anyway. If so, then that is your opinion on how you feel. I personally don't care enough about Mr. Clemens and what happens but I do care that we have individuals from Congress on this case that should be a court case. This has nothing to do with what will happen to the U.S. if he is proven guilty or not guilty. If it is now against the law to do the steriod thing and he did it prior to the law then it should be kind of hard to convict him for something that was not against the law at the time. And who are the other 88 players that have been accused and why are they not being treated in the same manner. If you are going to badger one this way then the 'court' system will need to do the same with all of them. One is actually no better than the other. To compare Clemens and Tutu with each other is a little strong altho the political part might fit. That is all Tutu was anyway - a politician. But that is a different story. In the end to declare Clemens guilty or not guilty is not something that requires so much attention on one person. If they are going to proceed with the farce then all 89 players should be in this proceeding and if they all did the steriod thing after it became a law then they all should serve the same amount of time. If you took one shot or 100 shots, A is just as guilty as B. Remove them from sports and whatever 'record' they set from the record books. The 'record' was accomplished under false pretense. Now we just need to figure out how to get the Congress away from all this and back to their real job - being a part time Congress person. Once again, that is a different story I need to address. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it Butch Conway
March 21 Chinese restaurant food unhealthy - Diet & Nutrition - MSNBC.comOkay now let's think about that statement. What you decide to eat is what is healthy or unhealthy. That statement did not mention anything about the portion of chinese food you eat but rather the platter or the dish. At least we need to look at the longevity of the chinese compared to the americans. Chinese may be for the most part skinnier but they are not any more unhealthy than the americans. Most americans eat out at fast food places. Fast food places of any sort are extremely unhealthy for you. The original chinese eat chinese food every day. Americans that eat fast food every day are destroying their kidneys and liver and creating heart problems. Unfortunately we americans tend to listen to what the media has to say whether they are correct in their statements or not. I am not educated enough to know how to calculate the amount of calories/sodium are in foods outside of the home but I do use some common sense and eat portions appropriate for my nutritional needs and take the rest home for at least one more meal if not 2. Whenever I go to a restaurant I eat foods other than american. Why I am not sure but I tend to enjoy foreign food more and I think maybe it is because of the way I see many americans and their stomach size. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Quote Chinese restaurant food unhealthy - Diet & Nutrition - MSNBC.com March 14 Talking about 10 car songs that hit on all cylinders - MUSIC - MSNBC.comWho came up with the title? A couple of the songs do not warrant being included in that list. 'Little Red Corvette' isn't even a car song. If a song mentions something about a car once in passing does not make it a 'car song'. A car song is a song that refers to the car thruout the entire song, hence G.T.O., 409, Little Deuce Coupe, etc. What about 'Deadman's Curve' by Jan and Dean or maybe 'Low Rider'. Seems if you're going to make a statement like that you should actually do some research into it. That's my story and I'm stickin to it. Butch Conway
Quote 10 car songs that hit on all cylinders - MUSIC - MSNBC.com July 13 Bush Must Act on MideastMichael Hirsh of Newsweek: Bush Must Act on Mideast July 13, 2006 My comments on his article Good points Mr. Hirsh. But not! There are many things that 'President' Bush has jumped into and then the press has jumped him about not thinking. He definitely has gotten weaker at his approach of things. I consider myself a hardliner and President Bush a middle of the road style person. I agreed with his going in and stopping Saddam but I don't agree with the sending of the National Guard to fight a police action; that is the job of the regular military. The National Guard is to protect our shores. We need to increase our military once again and until we do we will not be the 'superpower' that people believe we are. The 'evil' countries will sit with us and explain to us this is how it is going to go and we have started backing off. Why!! We need to stand steady with the talks. As far as the middle east talks go, we need to just leave that alone. They have been fighting this battle of dominance for centuries and will continue no matter what we may say or do the example being what is going on right now. The super powers removed the Palestinians from their own country after WWII so the Jewish people would have a country of their own. Why did they do that? I believe they would have gotten along to some extinct that is better than what it is now. We always have to be meddling in other countries problems. They are grown people and let them figure it out on their own. We can help with disasters and disease but should not step in with the military unless they request help and only do that in a consulting type of way. Be forceful but be polite about it. And leave the National Guard at home where they belong.

Butch Conway April 26 Gas prices hype: A lot of wasted energy - Glenn Reynolds - MSNBC.comMr. Reynolds and group along with most politicians and the like claim the price increase is caused by demand being up. I will beg to be different on that. Demand is not much different than last year give or take a couple percentage points. And the same goes for the previous years. Greed is what is on the increase. Greed by the executives that control how the oil is used and how much is used. If oil companies are having record profit years than why would the prices still go up 10 percent each year. Our cost of living allowances only increase by a percentage or two each year. That is a major duh. Doing the 'let's boycott the gas companies for a day' is a load of stupidity. You are not going to hurt anyone but yourself doing that. They will only increase the price to make up any difference there would be in a loss. But most will buy before they do that so they have enough to do that boycott and then buy directly after the boycott. Defeats the purpose of the boycott don't you think. As far as the hybrid and electrical cars go, we will have to look into the future for that to happen anytime soon. Our world is controlled too much by the auto industry and the oil companies to allow that to happen. Our lives are controlled by others that enjoy taking advantage of us and our monies. In order to make anything happen we will need to gain control 'politically'. To gain control 'politically' we will need to have the correct individuals in politcal power. In reality that will never happen. There are way too many uneducated Americans for that to happen. We may think we are educated but we really aren't. Whoever we do put in office that will start making a difference will be eliminated anyway. That is how power works. Then they feed you a line that they know you will accept. Now that doesn't mean everyone will accept but it does mean that a very large group will. We Americans will blame the President for what is happening. That shows our limited intelligence and that we always have to blame someone other than ourselves for what goes on in this world. Our President has lost a lot of influence(and it is not because it is George Bush nor Bill Clinton). The President is a somewhat figure head similiar to the Queen of England. Everything is controlled by other parts of the political parties. At one time our country had a lot of pull in the world but the other countries are starting to get smarter and realizing that we are a very dependent country. We 'need' the other countries to survive. Gas and oil are our main needs for now. Yes we need the gas to go back and forther to work and our pleasures but we need to realize that we do not need the gas to that extent. There are other means to provide us with what we need. We just need to move faster to obtain the needs.
April 05 Does a camera have a place in Supreme CourtIsn't the Supreme Court a public court? If it is a public court then there should be nothing wrong with having a camera in there. The camera would give people from other parts of the U.S. a chance to see what goes on at our highest justice system. We are America and we should not have to hide what our courts do. If the courts have something to hide then we need to re evalute our Justice system. Of course I am a little on the prejudice side concerning our court system. I don't believe we have a very good one. Too many people get away with things they should not get away with. I have a hard time dealing with having to provide luxuries to people on death row. They are there for a reason and it isn't for watching television or weightlifting or being able to get a free college education that I have to pay for. That just means that not only am I paying for my education but also that persons education. hmmm Something just isn't right about that picture. Anyway back to the subject at hand. Providing Americans who do not have the ability to go to Washington to watch the trial with a television is the answer to educating people what is going on in their court system. Since I have never been to the Supreme Court, I think that would be an educational value.

Butch March 03 At the movies: This week's new releasesCome on Ms. Newman get a clue on that statement about '16 Blocks' with Bruce Willis. He is an action star. It is an action film. I do believe the action titles have pretty much ran their course over history. So now we watch for the good guy to win as always or maybe the special effects. Acting nor the storyline have anything to do with the movies anymore. Some of the worse movies out there have made it to number 1 in sales over a weekend. It wasn't because of the acting nor the storyline. Willis does comedy nicely, not great but nice, as he can be funny. He does drama somewhat nicely and he does action great. One of the best probably. For storylines we need to ignore that they are a repeat of a different story with the same results. Of course I do realize that you have your opinion and I have mine but I do need to blog something and your story just happen to catch my eye. There is nothing really wrong with your story but was it needed. Not likely.

February 27 Gonzales makes case for surveillance programSurveillance within the U.S. has been going on for many, many years. When the 'Black Vault' first was initiated is when it all mainly started. NSA is here to protect not to destroy U.S. citizens. If you don't want the 'company' spying on you then be American and not of another country or for another country. You're an American citizen so act like one. NSA only spies on those they feel threaten the well being of the U.S. They do not 'go' after the normal citizen, but the problem makers. And they rightly should do that. So should the FBI and the CIA for that matter. If you have nothing to hide then nothing will happen and you will not be spied on by them. NSA spies on just about anyone in the world one way or another, whether it be by satellite, cameras or phone bugs if there is just cause. Those that are whining about what NSA does, need to get off their high horse and just shut up. If they are raising this much stink about it then they must have something to hide and don't want the nation to know. Whether what NSA does is legal or not is a good question. Of course by law it isn't 'legal' but I am glad that we have someone covering our backs. Their style of spying is in a grey area. All countries spy on other countries but you don't see the U.S. citizen whining about the fact that the Russians or the Japanese or the English are spying on them. Just the fact that we are spying on our fellow Americans. If you're going to whine about one country doing it then you need to whine about all the countries doing it. If the U.S. is spying on you, more than likely other countries are also spying on you. They also want to know what you're doing in case it is something against them. Wake up America and help the country, not whine about what it is doing to you. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Celizic: America's 10 biggest Olympic bustsOn many occasions thru history Americans have expected perfection from our athletes. Perfection just isn't going to happen. Close sometimes but on 99 per cent of the time not. If you win something one week, we expect you to win something the next week. That is what we have become. Too bad but that is the truth. I have absolutely no pity for Bode Miller on his performance on and off the slopes but then I didn't expect him to win a medal in all 'five' events. I do expect him to do his very best though. That looks like it didn't happen. He was not our savior at the Olympics. Fact is no one fell into that category. Some of us did our very best and it turned into our favor. We did receive 25 medals which is better than all other nations except Germany. There is nothing wrong with second place although first would have been nice. There were numerous efforts of achievement made that made us all feel good. Nearly everyone had good spirits about wanting to win. Sometimes you can have that spirit to win and still not even place. We as Americans must remember that we are not the only good team out there. Instead of looking toward the bad we need to look toward the good of the Olympics. There were great smiles and some very unfortunate sad moments but overall it was quite enjoyable. I thought I would never like 'ice dancing' but my wife talked me into watching it and I just marveled at how precise two skater can be and needed to be. There were numerous accidents but we all came out of it learning that we are human and can fall. We even got to hear conceit but we smiled and went our way happy to have seen a great performance. There are way too many beautiful stories to tell and I wish I could take that much time to tell them but somewhere along the line we will get to hear about them thanks to the media. Our ever best friends telling us their side of what happened. I hope we all are very proud of our athletes and we need to make sure we let them know that as America's best we still think of them as our best.

February 23 Rebates everywhere, but where's the money?Whiners! I have been doing rebates for quite a few year and have only had a couple not show up. One being my own fault for failure to fill the form out correctly and provide all the necessary proof. If they say it will take 6-8 weeks it usually does. Be patient. You are not the only one wanting the rebate. Always make a copy and when the time period is up and nothing shows make sure you call and explain to them that you did not get the rebate and you would like to talk to a supervisor. If that supervisor cannot provide you with the proper answer that is satisfactory to you then ask to speak to their supervisor. Always remember that everyone has someone they have to report to about problems they cannot handle. Of course I only had to do this once and was completely satisfied and my check came just a few days later. The point is that if you speak to someone who just answers the phone, you will probably get the runaround. So request to speak to a supervisor and more than likely you will get the answer you need because they know if you go over their head then they will be reprimanded for poor customer satisfaction. I do that whenever I feel I am getting the runaround. When it comes to money you must be bold to get your satisfaction.

October 26 California Educational System and the GovernorI spent 30 years not voting as I just have difficulty believing anything any politician has to say. It seems rare that they ever back up anything they promise. Once again our California Governor has said one thing and completed just the opposite. Of course we can never tell if he is a Democrat or Republican. He has taken the educational system and is trying to revamp a system that took years to work(not saying that it is working) overnite. Teachers are a shortage in this state yet he is laying them off. Why not lay off some of the administrators and save even more money. Now the overall reason I blame him and not the office is because he promised not to touch the educational system. Our kids have a difficult time trying to handle school; peer pressure and life in general. As an older individual I do feel they have no clue what actual suffering means but then it is a new age. Most have both parents working or just not caring what happens to them. Don't get me wrong. I don't feel sorry for our kids but I do for the teachers and the parents treat the teacher as a babysitter for their kids. My wife teaches and loves her job. She works extremely hard trying to get her students to understand the english language. Oh forgot, she is an' english ' as a second language teacher. Her students speak the language but have difficulty in forming the correct way of speaking. She has approximately 90 students of which about 25 fail each year. But do to laws, they are moved to the next grade even tho they have yet to understand what they were just taught. I can't claim to be anywhere near an expert on the educational system nor the political system but I do know when things are not going the way they should be. We have allowed politics to guide our educational system instead of the ones that actually do the job. Even the educational administration higher echelon is political. I need to better myself and the hell with the kids is their thought pattern. The political system has their hand in just about everything. That is very unfortunate as we need to let those who are in the trenches teach the administrators what needs to be done to fix the educational system. Most administrators have never taught in a classroom and have no clue what needs to be done but they sure can listen to a survey and screw it up. We need to explain to the Governor that he needs to quit parading around in his 'Hummer' and start working out the kinks. With the gas prices as they are, he has the nerve to show off one of his Hummers. And of course people eat that up. So there ya go. I'm off my soapbox for a few minutes. Let's Talk About Red InkI read in CCN.com that there are states now trying to stop teachers using red ink to grade papers. This is suppose to be demeaning to students. Teachers should use a more subtle color like purple as an example. Give me a break!!! Who is in control here? The student or the teacher? I do believe that the American is getting a little too sensitive about simple things. In all actuality, a color is a color. Red ink has been used by the teacher for many years and probably longer than the complainers have been alive. If the student doesn't like the red ink then that student needs to get over it!! And so should the parent. The red ink is not demeaning but instructive. It points out the errors made by the student or even makes a point of letting the student know what can be done to solve the error. They just needed something to whine about I guess. And now you have my opinion for what little it counts. Ladder 49Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic. "You will follow his character on a journey. You experience his first thrills on the job: the conquest of danger, the adrenaline rush of heroism, and the satisfaction of knowing you're helping people and saving lives. You meet his friends, watch him fall in love, and become a father. In horror you watch as these same friends and comrades die or become severely maimed. Like the main character, you too now feel the burdon, the wrestling with hard choices, and the sacrifices that must be made. I was stunned by the non-Hollywood ending. Expect to be hit hard with a somber, emotional punch."(Those words could not describe it any better and are a quote from another reviewer). John Travolta played an extremely good role as the Captain of Engine 33. Jacinda Barrett was marvelous as the love of Joaquin's life as well as his wife. She looked and played the role with her full heart in it. You are definitely not watching "Backdraft". Ladder 49 shows reality at its best and worst. Cinderella ManWhat a movie! Russell Crowe was outstanding in the portrayal of American boxer James Braddock. He brought out the kindness that Braddock was known to have displayed yet his great determination was portrayed even better. Paul Giamatti should be getting a supportive actor nomination out this one. He put his heart into this role as he has in the last 3 movies. Renee Zellweger did an alright role play. I think if she had been a mother in real life she may have pulled it off much better. As Braddock's loving wife she was just outstanding. Craig Bierko's part as Max Baer was also in the outstanding category. You have to watch his eyes and facial features. The boxing scenes looked very real although having boxed in the golden gloves numerous times, I can tell you that if you hit me that hard I know I would go down. This is a must see movie!! New OrleansWouldn't you think that the levee problem would be that of the Mayor of NewOrleans. The condition of the levee is a local issue and not a federal issue altho it has now become a federal issue. The Mayor and the former Mayors of New Orleans probably should have thought of this problem way before the federal government. More than likely there have been no Presidents that have memorized a speech. When President Bush made his speech and looked down at the paper a lot showed you that he is no different except I don't think he reviews his speech before giving it and others probably have. He happens to be a politician just like the mayor and governor are. Bush has no excuse for having not caught this earlier than he did but he didn't and he is trying to play catch-up now. Not a good sign for a president. The Mayor stood in front of a TV camera crying as to where is federal government. What was that!!? He is the Mayor of a city and has yet to act like one. There is looting everywhere there was flooding and he wanted the federal troops to come in and help. What happened to his police force? Where were the parish authorities? How about the Louisana Highway Patrol. We saw none of these anywhere. That should have been the first line of defense against the looting, raping and destruction. Then would come the state national guard followed by the federal government. The chain was broken instantly by the mayor and the governor. What happened to all theprisoners in the different parrish jails. My understanding(and that is hearsay only) is the mayor granted the release of the prisoners so they would not be caught in the flood. Duh!! If this really did happen we can now say New Orleans and the surrounding area are in a little bit of trouble. Maybe that is where some of the looting started. Now lets talk about the price for the repair. The price of 262 billion is a little on the steep side. Yes there will need to be repairs but that is an outrageous amount. I would believe in the billions but not that much. Did no one in New Orleans have insurance? If the insurance companies have to pay out and then the government also fork out 262 billion then something is wrong with this picture. I live in an area where I am 30 miles from a lake that they believe will flood one day. So they have decided to require that all homeowners in the flood zone have flood insurance. The lake as never flooded but just in case. Somebody is thinking of gouging the prices maybe. Speaking of gouging! Increasing the oil prices because a few derricks were destroyed is a little on the gouging side I do believe. Then to blame it on the storm. We have had other storms and the price of oil was not determined by that no matter what damage it did. Just a good reason to increase the price once again and have something to blame it on. We do not rely on the oil for the gulf. And neither does OPEC. America needs to quit bowing to this treatment and finally stand up and do something about it. Now the price has increased again because of the 'possibility' what Rita may do. Why are American letting this crap happen to them? We use to have the guts to stand up and say no. Are we becoming a weak nation that will cower and do as we are told even tho it is not to our benefit. Stand up America!! That's it for me. I'm off my little soapbox. I love my country and will always be on and off the soapbox till someone hears me. October 19 Talking about Dress code won't solve NBA's woes - NBA - MSNBC.comIt sounds like you're on a high horse Ron. Dress code for the players on the court is their uniform. Dress code away from the arena attending functions, leaving and departing the arena, or even on plane flights should represent the type of human they are. Wearing of shorts or pants with the pockets down to their knees and the belt line in the middle of their butt is not something that the kids need to learn. If they start seeing the players they look up too wearing nice looking attire (and that of course is in the eye of the beholder) then maybe their attitudes will change. I work around young people day in and day out and way too many think they own the world and can do whatever they want. I constantly see them not hold the door open for others or even say 'excuse me' when needed. It is like they lost respect for others. If the sports figures start projecting how the kids should be and not act like they have been projected in the news then maybe we will see a positive change in the kids. It all deals with respect in the end. I don't agree with the jewelry bit though. That is taking it a little to far. Jewelry when worn appropriately can look extremely nice. Of course I don't refer to the goudy looking huge name on the gold chain. That is stepping over the boundary of looking good. Too much jewelry can also look goudy. Butch Conway Quote Dress code won't solve NBA's woes - NBA - MSNBC.com Talking about Pacer says new dress code is ‘racist’ - NBA - MSNBC.comI don't know if I would call it 'racist' but maybe thoughtless. The NBA should have a dress code that indicates they are professionals and that they are trying to set a standard among sports figures. A very large group of kids, as well as adults, look up to the players and if they see the neatness the players project then maybe, just maybe, they also will start looking more appropriate. Maybe pull the pants up to where we don't have to look at their underwear or their butt. That part is rather foul looking and projects a disrespect for proper attire. The wearing of jewelry should not be banned as long as it doesn't become obnoxious. On occasion I have seen players wear enough jewelry that it takes away the classy look they portray. I'm all for the dress code but give back the jewelry.

March 21 Sex and MoviesNo matter how you want to view it, if there are people who want to see sex in a movie, they will see it from home or the movie theater. If the movie attracts only one person, that could be one too many. That one person could be a sex offender. Sex, in whatever form you see it i.e. Playboy, Penthouse, the movies or even in plays is not what it use to be. It was always left up to your imagination what happened or what that person looked like without his/her clothes on. When Playboy made its first appearance you really saw nothing. You imagined it only. Don't get me wrong but it did show enough to make you think wrong but it was there. The movies have changed drastically. We rarely saw the bedroom but we did get to hear or see them refer to going to bed. It was an unwritten rule that whenever a bedroom scene was shown that there would be twin beds there no a full size or super king. But you knew in your mind what they were going to do. Now we get to see just about everything on the body. Some movies actually do show everything and the act of sex. What happened to our minds? We lost our imagination is what!! We need to re-evaluate what needs to be thought or seen and force the studios to quit making and selling it. That would also go with the music industry. They feel they are so high and almighty that no one can touch them. They have failed to realize they are in America and we will only tolerate just so much before we have it removed. The entertainment industry need to straighten up and get their act(no pun intended) together. That's my thought and I'm sticking to it.
